Bran is the hard outer layer of grain and can be milled from any cereal grain, including rice. Bran is particularly rich in dietary fiber and omegas, and contains significant quanitities of starch, protein, vitamins and dietary minerals.
Rice bran is a by-product of rice milling and it’s known to contain antioxidants. It’s known that a major rice bran fraction contains tocotrienol, gamma-oryzanol, and beta-sitosterol – all of which may contribute to lowering the plasma levels of various paramenters of the lipid profile. Rice bran also contains a high level of dietary fibers.
Most dietary fiber products on the market are psyllium-based, and most produce carbon dioxide and methane in the intestinal tract which can cause bloating, gas and discomfort. The stabilized rice bran found in Rice Fiber Plus is a “friendly fiber” promoting “regularity, alleviating occasional constipation while helping one’s body digest food more quickly and easily.” Rice Fiber Plus may help to promote normal elimination and regularity, healthy weight management, and normal blood sugar levels.Read Full Post | Make a Comment ( 2 so far )
Smoothies can be a convenient way to take your nutrients on the run. The versatility of ingredients means smoothies can be infinitely tailored to your taste and preferences. Retail available smoothies, and smoothie products, usually contain pasteurized ingredients which means the fruits and/or superfoods predictably have a loss in some vital nutrients. The best choice is to make your own smoothie with fresh, organic ingredients.
An early-in-the-day smoothie takes little time to prepare, and can keep you feeling satisfied and energized through lunch. You can customize your own super foods and add-ins as there are no rules, just endless combinations. Here’s a healthy smoothie idea that’s full of nutrients and is delicious.
* 2 Tbsps.each of linseeds and hempseeds that have been soaked overnight. This releases their goodness and makes them easier to absorb. (They’re packed with essential fats for physical and mental health.)
* One scoop of our Greens First morning antioxidant blend, or one scoop of our Red Alert afternoon antioxidant blend.
* Frozen Acai berries (high in antioxidants and other powerful nutrients… the current darling in the antioxidant world), or frozen raspberries
* 25 Fresh Blueberries (the age-defying fruit)
* 4 Frozen strawberries (loaded with zinc and other nutrients to help you feel great)
* 1 banana (packed with potassium and one of the best ingredients to thicken and bulk out a great smoothie recipe)
* 1 small packet of Stevia (the sweetener that’s good for you and is highly alkalizing. It’s better to sweeten a smoothie naturally with fruit or sweeteners)
* A pinch of bee pollen (a great longevity foods and also helpful in keeping you from getting colds and flu)
* Enough water to make it a nice consistency (essential to our lives)
There are many other smoothies you can make but the best smoothie is one that offers you healthful benefits and tastes great!Read Full Post | Make a Comment ( None so far )

Background: Current interest in the role of functional foods in weight control has focused on plant ingredients capable of interfering with the sympathoadrenal system.
Objective: We investigated whether a green tea extract, by virtue of its high content of caffeine and catechin polyphenols, could increase 24-h energy expenditure (EE) and fat oxidation in humans.
Design: Twenty-four–hour EE, the respiratory quotient (RQ), and the urinary excretion of nitrogen and catecholamines were measured in a respiratory chamber in 10 healthy men. On 3 separate occasions, subjects were randomly assigned among 3 treatments: green tea extract (50 mg caffeine and 90 mg epigallocatechin gallate), caffeine (50 mg), and placebo, which they ingested at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Results: Relative to placebo, treatment with the green tea extract resulted in a significant increase in 24-h EE (4%; P < 0.01) and a significant decrease in 24-h RQ (from 0.88 to 0.85; P < 0.001) without any change in urinary nitrogen. Twenty-four–hour urinary norepinephrine excretion was higher during treatment with the green tea extract than with the placebo (40%, P < 0.05). Treatment with caffeine in amounts equivalent to those found in the green tea extract had no effect on EE and RQ nor on urinary nitrogen or catecholamines.
Conclusions: Green tea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond that explained by its caffeine content per se. The green tea extract may play a role in the control of body composition via sympathetic activation of thermogenesis, fat oxidation, or both.Read Full Post | Make a Comment ( None so far )
THE TOXIC WORLD WE LIVE IN
More than ever before, we live in a toxic world. We ingest toxins into our bodies from the water we drink, the air we breathe and even the food we eat on a daily basis. Our health depends on our body’s ability to eliminate toxins. Our bodies are designed with 7 channels of elimination. Our blood, colon, kidneys, lymph, liver and lungs all work together to cleanse toxins out of our system. But, our internal natural cleansing system is being challenged by a toxic burden larger than any other time in history. When we become overloaded with toxins, our bodies are forced to store those toxins within our bodies, causing problems for the cells. Initial results from a small study where 30 men with low-risk prostate cancer were tracked showed interesting results. The men adjusted lifestyle choices to include diets rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, soy products, whole grains and moderate exersice such as walking an hour a day. They also practiced an hour of daily stress management such as meditation each day.
Besides the expected changes of weight loss and lower blood pressure, the researchers found the activity of disease promoting genes shut down while the activity of disease preventing genes increased. These findings were confirmed with compared prostate biopsies prior to, and after, the lifestyle changes. Viva relaxation, meditation, and a great diet rich in antioxidants!Read Full Post | Make a Comment ( None so far )
I recently started using the Pyramid Tracker at http://www.mypyramidtracker.gov/default.htm to assess the quality and quantity of my food intake, and my physical activity. The Food Calories/Energy Balance feature calculates my energy balance taking my food/energy/calories intake and subtracting the energy I expend from physical activity for the day. It also gives me a snapshot of my weekly, monthly and yearly statistics and my nutrition and physical activity progress (sometimes good and sometimes not so good).
Do you think MyPyramidTracker is practical? Do you like it?
